An Efficient, Time‐Dependent High Speed Stream Model and Application to Solar Wind Forecasts

چکیده
Predicting space weather effects of the solar wind requires knowing location and properties any embedded high speed streams (HSSs) or stream interactions regions (SIRs) that form as fast catches up to slow preceding wind. Additionally, this background affects evolution coronal mass ejections. We present Mostly Empirical Operation Wind with a High Speed Stream (MEOW-HiSS) model, which runs nearly instantaneously. This model is derived from magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations an idealized HSS emanating circular hole. split MHD radial profiles into small well-described by simple functions (e.g., flat, linear, exponential, sinusoidal) can be constrained using values. then determine how region boundaries constraining values change CH area distance front. MEOW-HiSS only reproduce corresponding profile error less than 10% for most parameters. produces at subsequent times almost no loss in accuracy. compare results four observed situ 1 au. method determining inputs extreme ultra-violet images use these hindcast cases. find average accuracies 2.8 cm−3 number density (50% over full profile), 56.7 km/s velocity (10%), 2.2 nT absolute magnetic field (50%), 1.6 longitudinal 7 × 104 K temperature (50%).

Mixture EMOS model for calibrating ensemble forecasts of wind speed
Ensemble model output statistics (EMOS) is a statistical tool for post-processing forecast ensembles of weather variables obtained from multiple runs of numerical weather prediction models in order to produce calibrated predictive probability density functions. The EMOS predictive probability density function is given by a parametric distribution with parameters depending on the ensemble foreca...
متن کاملAn event-based approach to validating solar wind speed predictions: High-speed enhancements in the Wang-Sheeley-Arge model
[1] One of the primary goals of the Center for Integrated Space Weather Modeling (CISM) effort is to assess and improve prediction of the solar wind conditions in nearEarth space, arising from both quasi-steady and transient structures. We compare 8 years of L1 in situ observations to predictions of the solar wind speed made by the WangSheeley-Arge (WSA) empirical model. The mean-square error (...
متن کاملSkill in Solar Wind Shock Forecasts
Forecasts of 96 shocks in the solar wind at the L1 point made by the HAF kinematic solar wind model made between 5 February and 31 December 2001 are compared to algorithmically determined shocks from real-time data from the SWEPAM and MAG instruments aboard the ACE spacecraft. Traditional measures of forecast skill used by the meteorological community are applied to these forecasts and observat...
متن کاملCoronal Holes and the High-speed Solar Wind
Coronal holes are the lowest density plasma components of the Sun’s outer atmosphere, and are associated with rapidly expanding magnetic fields and the acceleration of the high-speed solar wind. Spectroscopic and polarimetric observations of the extended corona, coupled with interplanetary particle and radio sounding measurements going back several decades, have put strong constraints on possib...
